Class-A Composition Shingles
Composition shingles are the most popular and most practical choice of roofing material in the U.S. for residential homes. They come in a variety of colors and styles and are offered by numerous manufacturers. The majority of manufacturers are now calling all their composition shingle products “lifetime.” So whether you purchase the least expensive or most expensive shingle you’re still obtaining a lifetime limited warranty.
Shake Roofs
Cedar wood shakes have been a popular roofing material for many years but have lost momentum in recent years largely due to a lack of understanding about the physical and chemical properties of the material. A Class “A” assembly (the highest of the three fire-rated roof systems that can be installed) can be obtained by installing a Class “B” fire-rated shake over special underlayment, which makes the entire system Class “A.”
Flat & Low-Sloped Roofs
In the past, flat or low-pitched roofs were done using tar and gravel, torchdown (modified bitumen), cap-sheet, composition roll roofing and/or foam roof. Except for foam roofing, these products required using a torch or hot tar for application. This created a potential for fire on the roof or around the property. Today, the industry is moving away from products that create a fire hazard to products that do not. Some other popular low-sloped roofing products include Metacrylics, American Standard Coating (ASC), TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) and PVC. All of the products greatly reduce or eliminate fire danger and have a long life expectancy.
Tile Roofs
There are two types of tile: clay or concrete. They come either light weight or standard weight. Light-weight tile can be installed on most homes while standard-weight tile may need to have an analysis done by a qualified professional to determine if the home can handle the weight of the tile.
